FACE Fashion Show 2009

As part of our campaign on corporate accountability and as the leading fundraiser for 2009, CUAI presented ethical fashion at the Cambridge Union. Lily Cole and Sam Roddick both gave speeches on the importance of human rights in fashion and the importance for both consumers and businessmen and women to prioritise ethical businesses and business practices. We presented 5 collections of the best in ethical fashion including Katherine Hamnett, Noir, From Somewhere, EJF, Beautiful Soul, THTC, Amana and Ciel. We also saw some incredible performances from the CU Contemporary Dance Soc and the Sin Cru.

The evening raised over £2,000 and was featured in the local media as well as the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and various online media.

Human Rights for China

During the run up to the Beijing Olympics, CUAI organised an exhibition and memorial for those who died in the 1989 massacre at Tiananmen Square. We remember and support the  Tiananmen Mothers.

The Tiananmen Mothers is a group of Chinese democracy activists promoting a change in the government’s position over the suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Around every anniversary of the 1989 crackdown, many activists and human rights defenders, including the Tiananmen Mothers have been placed under tight police surveillance and forms of house arrest.

Terrorism, Security and Human Rights

Highlights

Orange Wednesday

Hundreds of students and professors adorned orange jumpsuits for a day to campaign against imprisonment without trial and rendition.  The event raised £2,000 for Amnesty and created a fab poster – a group of students arranged into a (birds-eye-view) Amnesty candle on King’s lawn.
