WRITING WRONGS

x Stop Violence Against Women

Cambridge University Amnesty International are hosting a literary festival, "Writing Wrongs: Human Rights and Literature". We want to demonstrate not only the dedication of many writers to human rights causes, but also the natural connection between self-expression through art and literature, and the work of organisations like Amnesty International.

Many political prisoners are writers, documentary-makers, journalists or artists, people who endure being deprived of their basic freedoms because they will not sacrifice their integrity, people who will not be silenced. Equally, organisations such as Amnesty represent the immense power of the written word. When the prisoners whom Amnesty campaigns for are liberated, when their situation improves, when they are given access to their lawyers, it is purely because of the written messages of concern for their wellbeing from thousands of strangers around the world. Amnesty letters demonstrate that the world is watching, and that torture and abuse will not be tolerated or ignored.

WRITING WRONGS: AMNESTY HUMAN RIGHTS LITERARY AND ARTS FESTIVAL

::Moniza Alvi::
Wed 19 Nov Time tbc
Venue tbc
The British poet will be speaking about her life and work. Many of you may be familiar with her wry and powerful works exploring the nature of both cultural and individual identity, such as "An Unknown Girl" or "Presents from My Aunts in Pakistan". She will be speaking about the inspirations behind her writing and the importance of artistic freedoms.

::Imtiaz Dharker::
Thu 20 Nov Time tbc
Venue tbc
The Pakistani-British poet will speak about her career and human rights themes she has incorporated into her poetry. Her collections, such as "The Terrorist at My Table" or "I Speak for the Devil" emphasise her perspective on how gender or cultural inheritance reflect our conception of individuality. She has illustrated her works as a sequence of both poems and drawings and the talk will give a unique insight into the use of both art and poetry as self-expression.

::Soheila Sokhanvari::
Fri 21 Nov Time tbc
Venue tbc

The Iranian artist will talk about the methods she uses to create her works and the way she has used art to reflect the lifestyles of modern Iranian women. Soheila will be judging the entries of our UBDHR art competition and has exhibited at Kettle's Yard. She will be able to show examples of her work on a slide show and the talk is a must for anyone interested in art and how it may be used as social commentary.

::English PEN Panel Discussion::
Sat 22 Nov Time tbc
Venue tbc

We are expecting a fascinating panel discusssion from members of English PEN, including the President Lisa Appignanesi and writers Carole Seymour-Jones and Nadeem Aslam. PEN is an international association of writers working to promote freedom of expression, and can boast to being both the oldest international human rights organisation and the oldest literary organisation in the world. The writers of the panel will discuss their works and the importance of artistic freedoms. The aims of PEN strongly reflect human rights, while its emphasis upon intellectual liberty poses interesting philosophical questions.

The Times journalist will be speaking from 7pm at the Cambridge Union on her experience as the Correspondent for Baghdad. Her articles highlighting the lack of protection for Iraqi translators helping British troops changed UK policy, earning her the Amnesty Journalism Award.
