Amnesty News

We want to demonstrate not only the dedication of many writers to human rights causes, but also the natural connection between self-expression through art and literature, and the work of organisations like Amnesty International.

Many political prisoners are writers, documentary-makers, journalists or artists, people who endure being deprived of their basic freedoms because they will not sacrifice their integrity, people who will not be silenced. Equally, organisations such as Amnesty represent the immense power of the written word. When the prisoners whom Amnesty campaigns for are liberated, when their situation improves, when they are given access to their lawyers, it is purely because of the written messages of concern for their well being from thousands of strangers around the world.

Amnesty letters demonstrate that the world is watching, and that torture and abuse will not be tolerated or ignored.
